About our school

When are the classes?

The Rockschool follows the schedule of the secondary schools.

Classes always start on September 1 and normally continue until the end of June. Depending on the holidays and absences, this can differ by a few weeks.

This school year has the following holidays:

  • Oct 28th - Nov 3rd: Autumn Holidays
  • Nov 11th: Armistice Day
  • Dec 24th - Dec 25th: Christmas
  • Dec 23rd - Jan 5th: Chrimstas holidays
  • March 3rd- March 9th: Spring Break
  • Apr 7th - Apr 20th: Easter Holidays
  • May 1st: Labor Day
  • May 29th: O.L.H.: Ascension Day
  • June 9th: Pentecost Monday

What if i’m absent?

You may not be able to attend class for one reason or another. We ask you to always inform us as soon as possible (48 hours in advance) if you cannot be there.

Valid absences

This means that you are absent and you can recuperate the lesson at the end of your series.

You are allowed 3 valid absences per school year. Students with a school year plan are then entitled to take an extra lesson at the end of the year, or the lessons are made up throughout the year (during a holiday or if another student is absent before or after you).

Students with a ten-lesson series and a lesson card are also entitled to 1 valid absence per series. With the ten-lesson series, the lesson is added at the end. With the punch card, the lesson is not charged and you can simply attend an extra week.

Which absences are valid:

  • Illness with a doctor's certificate (copy of the doctor's certificate for work or school is also good)
  • Exceptional time off from work such as a business trip or exceptional meetings (with proof)
  • School trips or exceptional absence from school (exams only count if the exams fall at the time of the lesson itself (with proof))
  • Death or marriage in the immediate family (with proof)

Proof of absence must be delivered to the reception or via the online tool before the last day of the month in wich the absence took place. Certificates issued later are no longer valid.

Invalid absences

Invalid absences means that you are absent, but still pay for the lesson. You may always be absent invalidly, but we do ask that you inform us as much as possible. ATTENTION: If you are absent without notice three times in a row, your time slot will be freed up for another student. In this situation you will not get your money back!

Wich absences are invalid:

Absences that are not justified by a doctor's certificate or exceptions as mentioned in the above paragraph.

Some examples:

  • To study (you can always ask to do the lesson online to limit your lost study time)
  • Personal vacations
  • Because of other hobbies, for example: having a game with the schoolteam, mathematics olympiad, catechesis for communion. Plan your lesson in the Rockschool so that these things do not overlap!

Beceause band class is with several students together, they will always be invalid.

For more info about absences, check our regulations!

What if my teacher is absent?

Sometimes it can happen that a teacher is absent due to illness or because they have a performance. When a teacher is absent, we will initially look for a replacement teacher. It may therefore happen that you arrive at De Rockschool and are taught by a substitute. If we can't find a replacement, a message will be sent to the first mobile number you provided to inform you that the class cannot take place. Lessons that have been canceled due to the absence of a teacher will always be made up.

Can I take music lessons without music theory/solfège?

The Rock School is a music school where you can start without having done solfège. We have already seen more than several students pass by who could not read music and who have grown into excellent musicians. As a school, we find that it's important that there are no obligations regarding the ability to read music, but that children and adults can just enjoy the lessons and their practice.

What level do I need to take music lessons?

Our school welcomes all levels of musicians. Beginners, advanced and professionals are more than welcome to come and play an instrument and take lessons with us. We do not expect a certain level, as long as you come to our lessons with enthusiasm and interest!

How do I find my classroom?

Someone will always be sitting at the reception, so, we are more than happy to show you the way to your classroom. If you want to be well prepared or if there is no one at the reception, you can find your way using the map below.

What do I do when my lesson series has ended?

When your ten-lesson series or trial lesson has ended, you can extend your lessons. With a ten-lesson series, your chosen moment remains free until the penultimate lesson. If you then inform us that you would like to continue, you will retain the right to your agreed time and day. If we have not heard from you after the ninth lesson, your hour will be added to our list of free hours and can be taken by another interested person. After a series of ten lessons, you can extend to a school year formula until October 31. With a trial lesson, your hour is reserved until just after the trial lesson. After this you can extend with a series of ten lessons or a school year formula.

From July, all of our students from the past school year and their family members can book new lessons. In August, our agendas will be open to everyone.

What if my ten-lesson series has not yet ended by the end of the school year?

If you have any classes left at the end of the school year, they can be carried over to the next school year. It is important to mention that you are responsible for this yourself. You must register again if you still want to take your remaining classes. With this new registration, please remind us that you were still entitled to some lessons that were not completed the previous school year. If you still have lessons left and would rather switch to a school year formula the following school year, this is also possible. The lessons you had left over from the previous school year will then be deducted from the invoice of the school year formula.

What if I no longer want or cannot come to class?

If you no longer want to or are unable to come to class, we can initially discuss whether another coach, another hour or another instrument would suit you better. We make this adjustment no more than once per school year. If you prefer to stop your lessons, you will lose your lessons and tuition fees in normal circumstances. We provide a number of exceptions. For example, you can transfer your lessons to a friend or family member. You must inform us of this in advance, so that we can make adjustments to the system. The lessons can also be paused, with this you specify your lesson time, but you have the right to resume your lessons at a later time. If your lessons are transferred to a new school year, your tuition fee will be calculated based on the new rates. Pausing lessons can occur in the case of long-term illness, injuries that interfere with play, or a death in the immediate family. We only make a refund in exceptional cases and in mutual consultation.

Can I take lessons every 2 weeks?

No, our regular lessons take place on a weekly basis. Unfortunately, we can't offer fixed biweekly lessons, as this would make it too difficult to create a consistent schedule for our coaches and lesson rooms.

If you're looking for a more flexible option, you can choose one of these alternatives:

  • Lesson Pass: book 10 lessons and schedule them flexibly when it suits you.
  • Share your lesson slot: you can arrange for someone else to take your lesson in the alternating weeks.
  • Weekly lessons: this remains the best option if you want to make steady progress while keeping a fixed lesson time.

About our camps

Are there music camps in Belgium?

Our music school has a music camp every year for anyone interested. We have a mini-Rockertjesweek, for all children between 5 and 8 years old, where the youngest rockers are immersed in a week full of music. This mini rocker week takes place in the Appeltuin in Leuven and lasts five days (without overnight stay). At the end of the week, all rockers form a real orchestra, with which a dazzling live concert is played on Friday.

We also have a Rockertjesweek on offer for 8 to 12 year olds. In these five days, without an overnight stay, all kinds of musical activities are provided. In addition, the rockers form a real band during the week, with which they play a live concert on Friday. This maxi rocker week takes place in the Appeltuin in Leuven. You don't need any musical experience to participate in both the mini and maxi rocker week!

Finally, De Rockschool also provides a Rock Camp for all over 12s. During these fantastic five days, bands are formed with which they rehearse for a whole week. In addition, there are also fun activities in the evening. Just like the rocker weeks, the rock camp ends with a fantastic rock concert. The rock camp takes place in the Kluis in Sint-Joris-Weert.

Why should I send my child to music camp?

The youngest among us can become acquainted with musical instruments and increase their starting interest in music. In addition, they also get the opportunity to play with others, which we already see as a positive experience. The slightly older people who participate in the rock camp can improve their techniques, fine-tune their playing and also gain experience in playing with a band on stage. This can only increase the interest and love for music!
